Rocking my Little Black Dress (LBD)
Well, maybe not hot, but pretty darn good for 55! 😀 Sometime, in 2014, my doctor wanted me to go on meds for high cholesterol. She said, you HAVE to lose weight. I had been holding at 230 for several years, down from 280. She gave me a list of videos. Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead by Joe Cross and Forks Over Knives, as well as one or two others. I watched Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead first.
Joe Cross made his journey with juicing. While juice is all well and good, I knew that it wouldn’t work for me. I don’t know where I heard of green smoothies, anymore. It could have been then when I was researching juicing. However, I decided that while I didn’t think that juicing would work for me, green smoothies just might. That day I went out and got a Nutribullet.
Starting Out with a Few Green Smoothies
I started out with a basic green smoothie about 3 times a week or so. While I didn’t notice any difference, immediately, I knew that it was good for me and they tasted great! Initially, I just kept it up because I wanted to be healthier and I knew the green smoothies would do it.
After a couple of months, my roommate made a comment about how I was doing so much better. For example: I would come home and do things. At the beginning, I used to come home and crash on the couch, now I would come home and work on the lawn, the house, or whatever. I was beginning to move more and feel better.
I Can’t Believe How Much Better I Felt
As I realized that I was feeling better and moving around, I also came to the point that I had to replace my blender. I like frozen smoothies. I really like frozen smoothies. I have only had one or two smoothies that weren’t frozen. Unfortunately, the NutriBullet was not up for daily frozen smoothies. After only a few months, it died. I wanted one that was stronger and larger and this particular Ninja came with a blender, food processor and two smoothie containers. Score!
I replaced the NutriBullet with a 1000W Ninja Blender. At first, I used the smaller containers (not the large blending container) and would make (and eat) the equivalent of 2 green smoothies. While, nutritionally, I was getting nutrients that I badly needed, that level of green smoothies had more calories… However, they were a much higher quality of calories and over the first year. I realized over that first year that, while I was not losing weight, I was dropping in sizes. I am not 100% sure, but I think I dropped 2 pant sizes that first year. For sure, at least one size smaller and looked and felt much better.
Changing My Diet. Slowly
Also, during this whole process, I have come to realize that a lot of today’s ‘food’ makes me very sick. For the most part, I am on a ‘whole food’ diet. Not in any particular ‘diet’ fashion, but in that I have very few processed foods. Mostly, they make me sick. A few of my problems are: High fructose corn syrup, carrageenan, sodium nitrates, EDTA, caffeine, gluten, dairy, and I am sure there are others that I can’t think of. Oh yeah…MSG gives me ‘things’ on my neck. This has helped me a lot because I have determined what things that I shouldn’t be eating. I happen to be very fortunate, in that my body reacts fairly quickly when I get something I shouldn’t have. Usually within the hour. However, that is a whole ‘nother story.
My Pivot Point
At the beginning of 2015, I was fresh out of a job that I had had for 9 years and slightly under 230 pounds. It was at this point, that I decided portion control would be helpful (instead of the super-sized green smoothies that I had been having). Using the Talenti Gelato containers that my son had ‘gifted’ me, I started making and freezing 3 to 4 smoothies at a time. This allowed me to make sure that I was consistently eating a smoothie just about every day. As I started to feel better and the weight was starting to come off, I began walking more. Slowly, during the year, more and more weight began to come off.
Around August, I began to use the ‘dandelion popper’ to get dandelions out of the yard. I quickly figured out that this was good for the yard and my body. I began using it as a stress reliever and a way to exercise, if I couldn’t (or wasn’t up to it) take a walk. The problem was, when I do something, I tend to go ‘all in’. I was popping those dandelions, 2 to 3 hours a day sometimes. Needless to say, the dandelion popper didn’t last very long, either. But you know what works even better? A claw hammer!!!
Clawing my way through the Yard
That is when my ‘dandelion eradication program’ went into high gear. You can pull a lot of dandelions when you are using something like a claw hammer. Yeah, it leaves divots all over the place, but if you water your yard, they will quickly fill in. If not, the rain will take care of it for you. The yard that we had at the time was about 1/3 of an acre and there were lots of dandelions to get.
What it did have, besides a relative dearth of grass, was a lot of river rocks. Apparently, it had been the last house built in the immediate area and had collected a lot of rocks on the property before a house was built. That was the primary cause of the equipment ‘malfunction’ that I had one day. Snapped in half! Never one to be slowed down by mere technicalities, I kept on, just using the claw hammer on the dandelions.
The advantage of the claw hammer is that it was incredibly efficient at getting to the root (albeit, not as deeply as the dandelion popper). I was able to increase the rate of which I was getting them out of the ground and it weighed considerably more. It was at this point that I started losing about 3 – 5 pounds a week.
Check Out the Dress
Approximately July 2016, I found a dress that I liked! I can’t even remember where I got it, but it looked like it had potential! AND it was an LBD!!! As my clothes started getting looser, I began to wonder how I would look in ‘nicer’ clothes and I started looking. Up until that point, I was wearing hand me downs from all of my overweight (and SHORT) friends. I exposed way more of my tummy than I wanted to.
The way it feels when you know that you look good after being overweight for so long, is amazing. You are in shock and you don’t even trust your own eyes. You know how you have looked the last several years and there is no way you could pull off a form fitting dress! No way!!!
Later on down the road, the weight is staying off, for the most part. As in all things, I have to re-evaluate the circumstances and change what needs to be changed. Summer in Kansas is HOT! Walking is out until it cools off, so will be checking out the pool! You have to find time to watch what you eat and exercise.
